Who are the best NYC wedding photographers?
First let me warn you. I’m severely jaded when it comes to what people consider as the best wedding photography.
That’s what happens when you’ve been photographing weddings for some time as I have. It’s simply that I’ve experienced more and seen more, and so when you’ve been there and have done that, it takes more to be impressed then if you’ve only been on the scene for a few scant years and everything’s brand new to you.
And that’s why when I’m asked, “who do you think are the best NYC wedding photographers?” or “who are the top wedding photographers in NYC?” I can’t give just any photographer a glowing review. Most wedding photographers are average. I’m not being harsh by saying that, this is simply a fact in any industry. Most of the participants in any industry are average. That’s why there’s such as thing as being “above average” – only some are at the top of any field. And because not that many achieve that status, it’s what makes being above average something special.
Oh, I know you’ve seen people ooh and ah over the plainest wedding photos ever and you’ve wondered “how could they???”… and to listen to their praises of these photos you’d have to think so many swoon-worthy wedding photographers must be the norm around here. But really, with thousands of people proclaiming themselves to be wedding photographers in the New York City area, what are the real probabilities that the majority of all wedding photographers are above average? In other words, can 90% of all wedding photographers actually be better than 50% of all wedding photographers? The math can’t lie. It can’t happen.
In my opinion we have a few tremendous talents who are the very best wedding photographers in NYC. Their names have been mentioned to me by brides and grooms looking for a wedding photographer when they’ve met with me and told me who else they’re looking at.
I believe these particular NYC wedding photographers stand out among their peers because their work is admirable, stylish and shows their mastery of the art. They’re really miles above others in those respects.
So without any further ado, and not in any order, here’s who I consider the best wedding photographers in NYC:
You’ll see Christian Oth’s wedding photos often in very popular wedding blogs such as Style Me Pretty. He’s pretty well known for photographing New York City society weddings.
Ryan Brenizer’s rise in popularity has seemed to come almost overnight, but this NYC based wedding photographer has been doing commercial photography for years.
Susan Stripling has photographed weddings world wide and has been published in many wedding photography magazines. Like the others, she’s won some top honors as well. But most of all, beyond great wedding photography, her approach is very thoughtful and considerate. She cares. That’s a quality I appreciate and relate to.
Brian Dorsey is a very likeable guy (I met him a few years ago) whose work has been seen in The New York Times, New York Magazine, The Knot, Inside Weddings, Modern Bride, Brides New York and Gotham Magazine. His approach is relaxed and fun. He’s known to photograph luxury weddings not just in New York but all around the world.
As I’ve written in other articles, the key to ending up thrilled with your wedding photos is to love, love, LOVE (not just like, not just be okay with, not just compromise on the photography because you’re getting a “good deal” – because it’s never a good deal if the photography is average) the photographer’s work first and foremost because at the end of the day that’s what you’re going to end up with. And then you have to feel absolutely comfortable with the photographer so you have joy, fun and the best wedding day ever.
Hopefully that’ll be exactly your experience too.
