You’ve looked at wedding photographer websites, found a few whose photo styles you like, and now you’ve called to set up meetings with them. And perhaps you’ve been reading my blog or emails and if so, with what you’ve learned you’re asking smart questions which go beyond the typical routine questions bridal blogs and wedding magazines recommend you ask (after all, when every wedding couple is asking the same simple questions such as “Do you have an album I can look through?” – to which every photographer replies with a generic, “Why, as it turns out, yes I do!” you’ll find you really need to be asking much, much better questions if you really want to discern and differentiate between photographers).
Much, much better questions. And I’m going to give you one of those questions right now.
Because one of the best questions you could ask to help you determine if the photographer’s the right person for you or not, is to ask them why you should hire them over anybody and everybody else. And then listen to what they say, because how they answer that question says a lot.
A photographer should be able to clearly explain – without hesitation and with full confidence – what it is that sets him or her apart, unique and distinctly from all other wedding photographers. Otherwise what’s so special about that photographer if all they can say about themselves is the same thing all the other photographers say about themselves?
Yet when asked what sets them apart from all others, most photographers will answer in very general, broad and vague terms, and then, very general, broad, vague terms used by many photographers, such as:
“We’re influenced by fashion.”
“We’re in touch with current trends.”
“We think outside the box.”
“We go beyond.”
“We offer great customer service.”
“We’re passionate about wedding photography.”
“We love weddings.”
“We love people.”
“We’re fun to work with.”
All of which doesn’t set any photographer apart or make them any better at those attributes if everyone also says the same things about themselves. Plus it’s not as if you’re looking to do business with photographers who aren’t creative or who don’t have great customer service, or who don’t love weddings and photography. Those are all attributes you’d expect to find in a wedding photographer. And none of those attributes distinctly point out what makes that photographer your best choice over all the others.
And so it goes without saying if they don’t have anything truly distinctive to say about themselves, then chances are, after it’s all said and done, well… neither will you.
When wedding couples come to me what I find is they want a wedding photographer who does have truly distinctive strengths and specific insights on wedding photography that clearly stand apart from all others. When you speak about your wedding photography with someone who can tell you specifically unique attributes about what they do better than anyone else, you’ll know if that photographer’s the perfect fit because it will be clear, obvious and resonate with you.
