From the bride: I knew I was falling in love when I started following Manish around his apartment watching him brush his teeth!
We chose early July for our wedding because we love the outdoors. And so, we absolutely wanted a garden wedding, but simply couldn’t find the perfect spot on the Maine coast, where Christine grew up. Since we live in NYC, we decided to look around the area here.
Out on long island we fell in love with Orchard Hill, a charming colonial on the grounds of Old Westbury Gardens, New York. It has an intimate elegant feel and charm that fit us both perfectly. And if you don’t know about Old Westbury Gardens and the grandeur of this estate and its acres of property, the story goes that back around 1903, the heir to a U.S. Steel fortune was madly in love with an Englishwoman, but she was homesick and pined to leave America to return back to England. So he promised her if she married him he’d build her a home here in the States which would look like her family home back in Britain. She said yes.
That house today is a testament to that love and devotion. These grounds are listed in the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in New York. In fact, you’ve seen the grounds in movies such as “Love Story” and “North by Northwest,” as well as in fashion spreads, as many television scenes and feature films have been shot here.
Our officiant was an artist friend of ours. We wrote our own vows and for the ceremony also brought in a tabla player and a sitar player to represent Manish’s heritage and culture. But the day before, we gathered together as a family for an intimate Hindu ceremony. The traditional sari Christine wore for the Hindu ceremony was the sari Manish’s mom wore for her wedding ceremony forty-three years ago.
For the western ceremony Christine wore a bias cut silk crepe gown with diagonal seams, a small train, featuring crystal hand-beading and a scoop neck designed by Christiana Couture, London. The groom wore a Canali 3 piece suit. Christine’s oldest childhood friend designed the invitations and Christine’s mom found a collection of 100 antique aqua glass vases for the table decor to hold flowers, which gave every table a special family touch.
On the day of the Hindu ceremony, here’s what happened…
