The wedding ended at 1 AM.
Early the next morning, the exhausted wedding photographer, still half asleep, got a text from the bride:
“Can we get the photos today?”
Naturally, we all want to see our wedding photos a.s.a.p.
Some wedding photographers do manage to eek out one or two the day after the wedding, quickly posting it up as a teaser on Facebook or on their blog.
There are those photographers who do all their post production work (all the work they do on the images) in batches, applying universal treatments to groups of digital files at once, to get a fast turnaround of only a few days.
For the most part, images straight out of the camera do need some work to look their best.
There are studios that do a whole six seconds worth of work on each and every wedding photo by doing it in batches. They’re that speedy.
They need to be. They’re not really charging for more refined work then that.
Which is okay if a fast turnaround time is your priority for a great wedding photo.
It’s not mine. So the way I do it, it happens to take longer.
That’s because every image has its own specific needs. Dumping them all into the same batch for the same fix wouldn’t be the way to take care of the individual needs of each print.
Besides which, the tools needed that make images look really, really good don’t lend themselves to batch actions.
Skin retouching, selective burning, dodging, toning… requires a more thoughtful process in crafting an image to take it to the next level. You need to be precise about what’s done to the wedding photo. You need to think and consider your work as you work.
That takes time.
Naturally, the difference in results are like night and day.
There are the type of clients who care enough to want it done well. Those are the wedding couples I cater to.
All the same, no one wants to wait forever for their wedding photos.
So that goes back to the question. How long does it take to get wedding photos?
Here’s what I do. While you’re away on your honeymoon after the wedding frolicking on some exotic beach somewhere having the time of your life, I’m hard at work on your images.
