“The 20 Questions To Ask Wedding Photographers”

By your 30′s and 40′s, you’ve had more life experience. Perhaps have already been through a marriage. And now, as opposed to a decade ago, some things about life and love have become much more meaningful and significant for you.

And you want your wedding to be about that meaning.

Like for this bride:

At her wedding photography planning consultation with me, she brought up the “bridal party jumps in air” shot as an example of what she did not want at her wedding. She wanted me to know, in no uncertain terms, that she’s vehemently opposed to this cliché photo. Just hates it, she said.

This is what she tells me: She’s 39. Never been married. All her friends got married in the last 5 years and she’s been to all of their weddings. 16 weddings in total.

Each wedding had a different photographer.

And at each of the 16 weddings, each photographer had the bridal party do that cliché “jump in air” shot.

Remember, we’re talking about 16 different photographers. 16! And they’re all making the bridal party do this same exact shot at every wedding.

But this gets worse.

Because you can’t do only one take and nail it. When people jump for a photo, what’s going to happen is some will hardly lift off the ground. Some will throw their hands in front of the next person and block their face from the camera’s view. Some won’t be looking the right way. They didn’t jump all at the same time. The expressions and body language may need more oomph.

So the photographer has you do it again. And again.

All 16 photographers made everyone take a running jump and do it about five times.

Let me tell you what happens when you make people who are all dressed up run and jump five times.

They start to land on their ankles. Bouquets are spilling petals. Everyone’s sweating up a storm. Hair-do’s unravel and fly. Everyone’s banging into each other.

Eventually they’re getting totally messed up, sore and sloppy. And this is right before they’re going to make their grand entrance at the reception.

All for WHAT? What’s the point of this picture? For fun? What fun?

She’s had it.

She wants to make sure I understand this is not what she wants her wedding photographs to be (I don’t do those shots anyway but she wants to make sure).

She says she absolutely refuses to do anything like this at her wedding.

That she’s not a little kid and wants her wedding to be fun yet treated with some dignity because her wedding is extremely special to her.

Especially because she almost lost her fiancé a few years before to cancer.

They went through tough times to make it together. It was a touch and go journey. There were times she thought, maybe, this wedding would never happen.

But now it will. And damn if she’s going to acquiesce to accepting stupid photos as the memories and be treated like this is the equal to some kid’s third grade birthday party.

So she expects her wedding photos be more than trivial fluff because she demands better photographs come out of her wedding than that. That better photographs should and can come out of her wedding.

Heart-felt photos. Artistic photos. Real moments. Sensitive photography. Meaningful photos with which to remember this significant day in her life.

With which I of course agree 100%.
